"With his gentle, friendly disposition, Ishi played the role of Rousseauian noble savage far better than had Wild Peter or Victor. His reactions to modern civilisation aroused keen interest. Traveling around San Francisco shortly after his arrival, he was unnerved by the crowds. The exclamation "HANSI SALTU!!!!" burst from his lips: "Many white people, many white people!"
