Dionysus wandered about Greece looking for an entrance to Hades. He asked Prosymnus to show him the way. Prosymnus agreed on the condition Dionysus would allow himself to be "made love to as a woman is" by which he meant that he wished to sodomize the god. When Dionysus returned from Hades prepared to grant the favor, he discovered in the time that had passed, Prosymnus had died. He took a branch from a fig tree that grew over the man's grave, fashioned a member, and penetrated himself with it.
